Innovative solutions for climate-resilient agriculture
Climate change is creating new challenges for farmers across Europe. Higher temperatures, longer periods of drought and increasing pressure on water and other natural resources are making it more important than ever for agriculture to adapt. Climate action, sustainable resource management and environmental protection are therefore key priorities of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Across Europe, projects funded through EU programmes such as Horizon Europe and the CAP Strategic Plans 2023–2027 are testing practical solutions to help farms become more sustainable and resilient.
Artificial intelligence for more efficient dairy farming
The Mil-KI project – “AI-supported tools for management decisions in dairy farming” – uses farm data and artificial intelligence to help dairy farmers make better day-to-day decisions. The project looks at how resources can be used more efficiently while improving farm performance and supporting animal health and welfare. At the same time, it aims to reduce the climate footprint of dairy production. Training for farmers and advisers also helps bring these new tools and knowledge directly into farming practice.
Less water, more resilient orchards
As drought and high temperatures become more frequent, making every drop of water count is increasingly important. OPTIM’WATER – “Optimising irrigation practices for tree growers” – explores how growers can reduce water use without compromising yields or product quality. By studying the actual water needs of crops and using tools such as plant and soil sensors, the project tests more targeted irrigation practices. The goal is to save water while helping orchards become better prepared for changing climate conditions.
Smart agrivoltaics in winegrowing
Can the same land produce grapes and renewable energy at the same time? The project “Winegrowing improvement through smart agrivoltaics” explores exactly that. Sensors and smart systems adjust solar panels according to the needs of the vines and changing weather conditions. The approach aims to protect grape yields and quality, reduce irrigation needs and generate renewable energy, showing how technology can help vineyards adapt to climate change while making more efficient use of land and resources.
From artificial intelligence and smarter irrigation to agrivoltaics, innovation is giving farmers new ways to respond to climate change. These projects show how practical technologies and new approaches can help farms use resources more efficiently, adapt to changing conditions and become more sustainable and resilient.
