Professor Urs Niggli was the director of the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) from 1990 to 2020. Under his leadership, FiBL became a leading research establishment in the area of organic agriculture, developing into a European network with offices in Germany, France, Austria and Hungary as well as a representation in Brussels.
Since 2009, he has been an honorary professor for “Research Management in International Organic Agriculture” at Kassel University in Witzenhausen, Germany, and an honorary professor at the Agricultural University in Beijing since 2019. His teaching activities in Germany dealt with the principles of organic agriculture for international master students and with the technical and political development of organic agriculture in the EU. He holds an honorary doctorate from the University for Life Sciences in Tartu/Estonia.
He is currently president of agroecology.science, the Institute of Sustainable Food and Farming Systems, founded in 2020 where he works on projects with food producers and retailers, as well as charitable foundations He is also president of FiBL Austria and scientific advisor for Agroscope, the Swiss State Research Institute for Agriculture. Urs Niggli is a member of the Swiss FAO Committee (CNS-FAO) and a member of the Scientific Group for the preparation of the UN Food System Summit 2021 in New York.
