Matthias Pfeffer

Matthias Pfeffer is a prominent German journalist, TV producer, and author recognized for his extensive leadership in European media. He served as the managing director and editor-in-chief of FOCUS TV for twenty years, where he oversaw the development of numerous political documentaries and news programs. Throughout his career, which began as a war reporter covering major global events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Gulf War, Pfeffer has remained a vocal advocate for high-quality journalism and the preservation of a democratic public sphere.

In recent years, Pfeffer has transitioned into a leading voice on the intersection of digitalization, democracy, and artificial intelligence. As the founder of the Council for European Public Space, he focuses on creating a reliable digital ecosystem for Europe that prioritizes human values over algorithmic control. A prolific author and academic, his notable works include The Human Imperative: Power, Freedom, and Democracy in the Age of AI. He continues to contribute to the field through guest lectures at institutions like the Technical University of Munich and by advising organizations like the European Broadcasting Union on digital policy.
