Recognizing the power and influence of narratives in shaping public understanding, the Narratives Observatory combatting Disinformation in Europe Systemically (NODES) was founded earlier this year. Co-funded by the European Commission and led by Re-Imagine Europa, NODES brings together leading institutions such as Agence France-Presse (AFP), the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), PlusValue, Sotrender, Science Feedback, and Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia. The initiative seeks to delve deep into the dynamics of narratives, aiming to discern trends and develop tools that address disinformation effectively.

Drawing from our experience with climate narratives, we have observed that polarised narratives often share underlying values. Our research has unveiled narrative bridges capable of fostering open and constructive discussions in the public sphere. The narratives surrounding COVID-19 reveal their role as carriers of messages, accommodating a spectrum of viewpoints, from pro- to anti-policy stances, scepticism, and beyond. Through an analysis of claims, information, and disinformation within these narratives, we have uncovered that COVID-19 narratives transcend the immediate context of the pandemic, reaching into broader societal dimensions.

This event marks the second case study workshop of our series, “The Narratives that Shape our World” where we bring together stakeholders and experts to delve into topics vital for our democracy. We aim to extend the conversation beyond our research presentation and delve into the realm of COVID-19 bridging narratives. This discussion will build upon the insights shared during the presentation, providing an opportunity for a deeper exploration of the narratives that seek to bridge diverse perspectives in the context of the COVID-19 narratives.
