The Future of Biotech in the EU
Biotechnology is an essential component of the broader bioeconomy, which has been recognised by the EU as a vital pillar for addressing global challenges such as food security, climate change, and economic competitiveness. In the context of agrobiotechnology, it is central to the EU’s efforts in transforming its food systems and improving environmental resilience.
This project supports the EU’s efforts to strengthen biotechnology’s competitiveness and create an environment conducive to its growth by addressing the regulatory challenges that hinder its potential. It seeks to accelerate progress on the regulatory framework for biotechnology in the EU to help reduce barriers to innovation and facilitate the quicker adoption of advanced technologies, enhancing the EU’s global competitiveness in the field. Such efforts will ensure that promising biotechnological solutions can be deployed more efficiently across Europe, enabling their use in a wider range of applications, including within supply chains that rely on biotech-driven production beyond the EU. This is essential for scaling up their impact and achieving long-term EU strategic goals.
In continuation, the project explores and helps shape a new vision for biotechnology’s role within the EU’s broader economic, environmental, and sustainability agendas. This vision aims to align narratives around biotechnology with the EU’s strategic goals, particularly in the areas of food security, climate change resilience and sustainable development. While not seeking to oversell or overpromise the scope of biotechnology’s potential, the project highlights how these innovations can contribute meaningfully to the EU’s transition to more sustainable food systems and environmental resilience. Furthermore, by improving the dialogue between institutions, industry stakeholders, and policymakers, the project works to enhance regulatory efficiency and foster a more collaborative approach to biotech governance.
